From Lake Como to Switzerland
Tremezzo and Villa Carlotta, Menaggio, Lugano
Making this tour is probably the easiest way to discover the many treasures of our region: the XIXth century villas and the lake (once an almost obligatory destination for those making the “Grand Tour”), the remains of past dominations, and the international allure of a border town: Lugano
ITINERARY DESCRIPTION: Meeting with the guide and visit of Villa Carlotta. In addition to its large botanical park, the villa interiors feature art collections of the neoclassical period and rooms in which the original painted coffering of the ceilings has been preserved.
Late in the morning brief stop and walk in Menaggio, a lovely village with a view of Bellagio and of the three branches of Lake Como.
Lunch at a lake-side restaurant.
In the afternoon the tour will take us through the valley of Menaggio to Valsolda. Then, we will cross the border with the Canton Ticino (Switzerland) and visit the town of Lugano: the municipal park Ciani, the elegant via Nassa and the extraordinary Renaissance frescos by Bernardino Luini in the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli, will give us a taste of this welcoming international town.
